NCAA Volleyball: Nebraska Beats Georgia Tech in Front of an Awesome Bob Devaney Crowd

Nebraska 3 vs Georgia Tech 0- 25-11, 25-16, 25-21

Nebraska won this match with a balanced attack, good scouting reports and well executed game plan. They won convincingly.

Credit to the Devaney crowd for creating an environment where opposing teams feel privileged to play. Long Island University libero, Alasha Colon said after their match in Devaney “It was an unbelievable experience.” Prior to the match, Georgia Tech’s Coach Michelle Collier, talked about the unique experience it is to play in Nebraska.

While they feel it is an opportunity to play in such a great environment, Nebraska takes full advantage when the other team is overwhelmed by the Bob Devaney crowd.

Early in this match Nebraska drilled serves, blocked balls and ran their offense. Georgia Tech had no answers. Sets one and two were marked by a vast difference in offense as Nebraska hit .281 in set 1 and .500 in set 2 while Georgia Tech hit -.111 and .029.

Set three was competitive as the Yellow Jackets settled down, changed their system from a 6-2 to a 5-1 and began to run their offense. The one setter offense was more effective as Georgia Tech hit .267 in this set but the difference maker here was Nebraska’s block. The block got Nebraska out of long rallies as well shut down Biacna Bertolino and Tamara Otene in key moments.

Bekka Allick and Andi Jackson were suffocating as they watched where the ball was going and moved with speed to set up a wall in front of the Yellow Jacket hitters. Allick finished with four blocks, Jackson had five and Bergen Reilly had three blocks to go along with her 10 digs, 30 assists and add a kill to her excellent match.

Reilly set a balanced attack that kept the Georgia Tech blockers guessing where she would go next. Four of the five Nebraska attackers had double digit attempts and everyone hit at a high percentage rate. Jackson only had six attempts but four of those produced kills for a .667 hitting efficiency.

Georgia Tech did a nice job in a couple facets of the game and whoever wins between Kentucky and Arkansas will use these tools when they face Nebraska. Georgia Tech tipped effectively in places that forced Nebraska to play next level defense. The tips also created different out of system plays that slowed the Husker offense down.

The second thing Georgia Tech did well was choose their serving targets; Harper Murray and Laney Choboy and then move that serve around on those targets. Some serves were short, others floated while others were very deep and driven.

Nebraska plays again on Saturday December 9th at 5 pm CT. They play the winner of Kentucky vs Arkansas on ESPNU.
